About

The People of God Community was formed in the summer of 1984 through the agreement of eight families.  The actual name of the Community was officially adopted in 1986 after prayer and discernment.  The Scripture verse 1 Peter 2:9 was the culminating indication that we were “Once no people, but now God’s People, proclaiming His marvelous light.”

The founder of the Community is Martin Hudak.  Marty visited several covenant communities throughout the United States during a sabbatical from his teaching duties at King’s College in 1980-81.

In the early 1990’s the Community began to look search out affiliation with an international organization with a strong “Catholic identity.” That search finally ended with our acceptance as full members of the Catholic Fraternity of Charismatic Covenant Communities and Fellowships in 1998.

Our Community is presently comprised of seven couples, three widows and seven children under 18.   Moderator Jim Gialanella leads the community with the support of the Community Council (three additional members).

Throughout the years our charism has been expressed in hospitality, family life, music and evangelism.  We have had a strong youth apostolate for several years, ministered to married couples through “Marriage in the Holy Spirit Weekends” and “Couples for Christ,”  and strongly supported our family life through common “Re-Creation Weeks” together for over 25 years.   We have coordinated several “Life in the Spirit Seminars” and now find ourselves in a key “collaborative role” with our Diocesan Office of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal.  That role provides support for “Diocesan Core Teams” who give “Life in the Spirit Seminars” in various parishes.  We also provide the leadership for a diocesan charismatic music ministry used at various outreaches and at the Scranton Catholic Charismatic Conference every August.

  1. Hi! I was at your place probably about 16 years ago. I and Alex Orvieto began Mountain Movers at St. Anthony’s (which I heard was sold). I’m in NJ and think of you often especially since I’m hoping to purchase such a place for people of faith who care about all of God’s creatures. I’m a Catholic convert after graduating from the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary. I’ve met many Catholic people here (some are on the Board of God’s Creatures Ministry). We help people with veterinary expenses in the USA and have vegan (the original diet God created us to have) fundraisers. All is good and I hope that the Holy Spirit will continue to lead you in His Kingdom on earth as it is in heaven.
    Blessings,
    Jan

  2. Is the People of God still a voluntary, self governing member of the Sword of the Spirit association of Covenant Communities?

John, we are actually full members of the Catholic Fraternity since 1998. I have a question for you. Are you the John Flaherty who wrote so many wonderful songs out of Steubenville? I have been trying to catch up with you regarding copyright permission on some songs. You have blessed our community and so many others through that music. This is Jim Gialanella, community moderator(jimmyg@epix.net) or 570-333-4462. Sorry for the delay in responding. God bless and have a great Christmas season.
